The accident occurred on the railway that leads to the renowned Inca citadel of Machu Picchu, a UNESCO World Heritage Site cherished by travelers from around the globe.
The collision involved trains operated by Inca Rail S.A. and PeruRail S.A., both of which primarily transport tourists eager to explore this historic location. The crash resulted in the unfortunate death of a train driver and left around 40 others injured, with health officials reporting that approximately 20 individuals are in serious condition.
Among those injured are foreign tourists, including Canadians, highlighting the international impact of this devastating event. In an email to CBC News, Global Affairs Canada stated, "We are aware of Canadian citizens injured in Peru. Our deepest sympathies go out to everyone affected by the accident." The department also noted that Canadian officials are providing consular support and are actively engaged with local authorities. However, citing privacy concerns, they have refrained from disclosing additional details at this time.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision.
Social media platforms were quickly flooded with images depicting the wreckage of the trains, which were severely damaged and facing each other on the tracks. The scenes captured broken glass scattered across the ground and injured individuals receiving care alongside the tracks.
