The Miami Marlins are actively shopping right-handed pitcher Edward Cabrera, and the Baltimore Orioles are reportedly in the mix – could this be the next big trade?
According to sources, the Marlins are currently in talks with several teams, including the Orioles, regarding a potential trade for Cabrera. At 27 years old, Cabrera still has three seasons of club control remaining, making him an attractive asset for any team looking to bolster its pitching staff. He's projected to earn around $3.7 million in arbitration in 2026.
However, the Marlins are reportedly setting a high asking price, which has led some teams to believe a trade is unlikely.
The Orioles, on the other hand, are keen on adding a third high-caliber starter to their rotation, alongside left-hander Trevor Rogers and righty Kyle Bradish. Remember, the Orioles acquired Rogers from the Marlins at the 2024 trade deadline.
But here's where it gets controversial... The Orioles might prioritize investing in a hitter like Kyle Tucker or Pete Alonso, considering they recently offered a five-year, $150 million deal to designated hitter Kyle Schwarber.
Looking at the broader market, the Toronto Blue Jays recently signed right-hander Dylan Cease to a seven-year, $210 million contract. This leaves Japanese righty Tatsuya Imai and lefties Framber Valdez and Ranger Suárez as the top remaining starting pitchers available.
Cabrera's performance last season saw him with a 3.53 ERA in 137 2/3 innings. He faced challenges, spending time on the injured list twice, once for a blister and again for a sprained elbow.
Despite the injury concerns, Cabrera's talent is undeniable. His average fastball velocity was an impressive 96.9 mph, ranking him in the top 13% of the league. His strikeout percentage also placed him in the top 26%. However, he did have a high hard-hit rate, and his expected ERA was higher than his actual ERA.
The Marlins seem open to trading most of their starting pitchers, with the exception of Eury Pérez. Trading Cabrera would likely mean Sandy Alcántara, the former NL Cy Young winner, would be a key part of the Marlins' rotation. Alcántara is set to earn $17.3 million in 2026, with a $21 million club option for 2027, making him the team's highest-paid player.
