A growing controversy is brewing around the Eurovision Song Contest, one of the world's longest-running televised events, as several European countries have announced a boycott of the 2026 competition. The core issue? Israel's participation.
A Clash of Values: Eurovision's Dilemma
Spain, the Netherlands, Ireland, and Slovenia have all taken a stand, citing Israel's military actions in Gaza as the reason for their withdrawal. This decision comes amidst mounting criticism of Israel's involvement in the contest.
In May, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez urged the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) to exclude Israel from the competition while its military campaign in Gaza continued. The state broadcaster RTVE, which hosted the 2025 contest, even received a warning from organizers not to mention Israel's operations during the final. In a bold move, RTVE displayed a message on screen before the broadcast, stating, "In the face of human rights, silence is not an option. Peace and justice for Palestine."
But here's where it gets controversial: AVROTROS, the Dutch broadcaster, claims that the contest has been used as a "political instrument" by the Israeli government through a promotional campaign supporting its entry. Taco Zimmerman, the General Manager of AVROTROS, stated that the withdrawal was not an easy decision but that "universal values such as humanity and press freedom have been seriously compromised."
Ireland's RTE echoed similar sentiments, calling participation "unconscionable" given the "appalling loss of lives in Gaza" and the ongoing humanitarian crisis. Slovenia also confirmed its withdrawal, standing in solidarity with the affected people.
And this is the part most people miss: despite a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas that took effect on October 10, the humanitarian situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate. Hospitals and essential services are overwhelmed, and most of the enclave's two million residents are still living in temporary shelters with no sign of improved conditions.
Some countries are still undecided. Iceland's broadcaster RUV, for example, is set to make a final decision next week, having previously recommended excluding Israel. On the other hand, Germany has warned that it could leave the contest if Israel is banned, while Austria, the 2026 host nation, has expressed support for Israel's entry.
In a recent meeting in Geneva, the EBU decided not to call a vote on Israel's participation. Instead, they approved new rules aimed at preventing government interference in the contest.
