In a noteworthy development for rugby fans, prop Xavier Va'a, formerly of the Sydney Roosters, has secured a new opportunity with the York Knights in the English Super League, signing a two-year contract.
Released by the Roosters at the close of December, Va'a had limited exposure in the NRL, making just one appearance during the middle of 2024. His journey took him from the Broncos academy to the Roosters, where he faced numerous injury challenges while trying to establish himself at Bondi.
Meanwhile, his brother, De La Salle, continues to be part of the Roosters and is expected to strive for a spot in the NRL lineup throughout 2026. As for Xavier, he is anticipated to become a key player in the starting lineup for the York Knights, who have gained promotion to the Super League for the 2026 season.
York's head coach, Mark Applegarth, expressed enthusiasm about Va'a's arrival. "He comes highly recommended and his footage looks exactly like the sort of player we were after, but more importantly, he seems the kind of player who will fit the culture we have at York," Applegarth shared on the club’s official website. He added, "He's come here to improve and to make his mark, and he'll add a lot of depth to our pack and a lot of punch."
Standing tall at 195 centimeters and weighing 114 kilograms, Va'a has been recognized as one of the most promising young forwards in the sport. With an impressive tally of 44 appearances in the NSW Cup, including 12 matches in 2025 where he demonstrated significant strength in the middle third, his potential for impact at York is considerable.
