GTEC Orders University of Ghana to Reverse 25% Fee Hike for 2025/2026 Academic Year (2026)

Breaking News: The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has stepped in to halt fee hikes at the University of Ghana for the 2025/2026 academic year. This decision comes after an uproar over a reported increase of over 25% in tuition fees across all colleges. But what does this mean for students and the university? Let's dive in.

GTEC has directed the University of Ghana to immediately reverse any recent fee increases and dues for the upcoming academic year. The commission's stance is clear: publicly funded universities must follow proper procedures, including obtaining Parliamentary approval, before adjusting student fees. This is a critical point, ensuring transparency and accountability in financial matters within educational institutions.

According to a letter dated January 5, 2026, addressed to the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, GTEC outlined specific actions the university must take. First, the university must reverse all fee increases and dues. Second, continuing students who overpaid compared to the previous academic year's fees should have the excess credited towards their next year's fees. Third, final-year students who paid more than the previous year's fees must receive a refund. Moreover, all dues, including those for the Student Representative Council (SRC) and the Graduate Students Association of Ghana (GRASSAG), must revert to the previous academic year's rates. Finally, any newly introduced fees, such as those for the 75th Anniversary and Development Levy (if new), must be suspended, except for those already in place.

The university's management had explained that the increase was largely due to third-party charges imposed by student leadership, not by the university itself. However, GTEC's directive emphasizes the need for adherence to the Fees and Charges Act and the requirement for Parliamentary approval before implementing any new fees.

And this is the part most people miss: GTEC's letter also reminded all universities that they must maintain current student fees and only implement revised fees for the 2025/2026 academic year after obtaining approval from Parliament. The commission's mandate is to promote the effective and efficient operation of tertiary education institutions, ensuring compliance with statutory requirements.

But here's where it gets controversial... The University of Ghana has been asked to provide evidence of compliance to GTEC by January 12, 2026. Failure to comply could result in serious regulatory sanctions against the university. This raises questions about the balance of power between the university, student leadership, and GTEC.

What are your thoughts? Do you agree with GTEC's intervention? Do you think the university should have the autonomy to set its fees, or is government oversight necessary? Share your opinions in the comments below!
