Imagine a small, quaint borough, a time capsule of sorts, nestled 30 miles north of Pittsburgh. This is where JJ's story began, where he honed his craft, and where he still finds solace in the familiar. With a key to an indoor baseball facility, he can practice anytime, day or night. "It's a place that slows me down," he shares, reflecting on his busy 2025 season and his winter training in Jupiter, Florida.
But here's where it gets interesting: Mars is more than just a training ground. It's a community that has embraced JJ, and he, in turn, feels a deep connection to this place. "When we moved here, it was so peaceful. Just a single gas station," he reminisces. "It's my home, my sanctuary."
Cardinals Magazine took a trip to Mars to uncover the roots of this promising prospect. And what a journey it was! JJ, our trusted guide, hopped into his trusty truck (a vintage 2006 model) and showed us the town. From the batting cages and ballfields where he honed his skills to the golf course and fishing ponds where he relaxed, we got a glimpse of his life beyond baseball.
He spoke of his first job, his beloved childhood dog, and his favorite restaurants, now under new ownership. It was clear that Mars had left an indelible mark on JJ, and he, in turn, felt a sense of belonging.
"This is where it all began," he says. "I learned the game here, but more importantly, I learned about life."
