A thrilling revelation has emerged from the world of Formula 1, where Lando Norris, the newly crowned F1 champion, has lifted the lid on a crucial strategy involving his teammate, Oscar Piastri, that played a pivotal role in his title win.
In a bold move, Piastri started the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on hard tyres, a decision that was part of a carefully crafted McLaren strategy to challenge Max Verstappen. While Verstappen ultimately won the race at Yas Marina, Norris' strategic approach ensured he emerged as the champion, claiming the title by a narrow margin of just two points.
But here's where it gets controversial... Piastri, driving the leading MCL39, employed an offset approach, finishing second and, in a remarkable display of teamwork, was tasked with pushing Verstappen into making a mistake. Norris described it as a strategy to "push Max into doing something."
The Australian driver, Piastri, made a daring move around the outside of Norris at Turn 9 on the opening lap, setting off in pursuit of Verstappen on more durable tyres. This move prevented the Red Bull driver from employing tactics that could have given him an advantage over the McLarens.
When asked about Piastri's move, Norris acknowledged that it was a pre-planned strategy, revealing, "There wasn't an exact plan, but I was very happy letting Oscar go." He further expressed his gratitude to Piastri, stating, "Oscar was just as much a part of trying to achieve what we've achieved, and I have to thank him for that."
However, Norris also shared his disappointment that Piastri couldn't secure a win, having not tasted victory since the Dutch Grand Prix in August. This resulted in Piastri falling short of the championship crown by a mere 14 points, despite holding a comfortable lead earlier in the season.
"I wanted Oscar to win today," Norris explained. "That would have made me even happier, seeing Oscar on the top step, because he would have achieved his goal of finishing second in the championship, and I would have achieved mine as well."
