Red Bull’s Laurent Mekies thinks so, but it won’t be without its fair share of drama.
During the team’s recent launch event in Detroit—a strategic nod to their partnership with Ford—Mekies candidly admitted that the road ahead will be paved with “struggles, headaches, and sleepless nights.” This bold move comes just as F1 prepares to introduce sweeping technical changes in 2026, making Red Bull’s decision to manufacture their own power units under the Red Bull Ford Powertrains banner even more daring. And this is the part most people miss: Detroit wasn’t just a random choice—it’s the U.S. home of Ford, Red Bull’s long-standing ally in this high-stakes venture.
Mekies didn’t sugarcoat the challenge: “We’re stepping into a pivotal moment for Formula 1—the most significant regulatory shift in its history. But we didn’t stop there. We’re also taking on the monumental task of creating our own power unit, backed by Ford’s incredible support.” He added, “It’s a challenge that might only be feasible for a partnership like Red Bull and Ford, but that’s exactly why we’re here. It’s the kind of audacity that defines us.”
When pressed on what success would look like in their inaugural year as a power unit supplier, Mekies was refreshingly honest. “Thinking we’ll instantly match teams that have been doing this for years would be naïve,” he admitted. “We’re under no illusions—there will be hurdles. But we’ve assembled an exceptional team and partners, and we’re ready to weather the storm. We’re confident we’ll emerge on top, even if it takes time.”

Adding an emotional layer to the story, the first power unit, named DM01, pays tribute to Red Bull’s late founder, Dietrich Mateschitz. “His vision and boldness are the reason we’re here today,” Mekies said. “He wasn’t intimidated by the scale of this challenge, and now it’s our turn to honor his legacy and make him proud.”
Drivers Max Verstappen and Isack Hadjar were also on hand to share their thoughts. Verstappen, the four-time World Champion, admitted there’s still a lot of uncertainty surrounding the new era. “It’s all a bit unknown,” he said. “The car’s dimensions have changed, and the engine is entirely new. It’ll take time for us drivers to adjust, which is why testing will be crucial.”
Despite the unknowns, Verstappen’s motivation is sky-high after narrowly missing the 2025 Drivers’ title. “Finishing the season strong always helps,” he noted. “I’m incredibly excited to start this new chapter.”
