The Joy of Backyard Basketball: A Personal Reflection
The simple act of shooting hoops in the driveway holds a special place in my heart. Growing up in Jefferson City, Missouri, my brother and I would spend countless hours battling it out under the garage light, our games as fierce as any professional match.
Our age difference of just 15 months meant we were like twins, and the competition was intense. We'd do anything to win, even if it meant a broken nose. Sports, and basketball in particular, have always been a fundamental part of my life, but there was something unique about those driveway games.
The hoop, a permanent fixture in our driveway, brought people together. It created a sense of community, a place where anyone could join in, regardless of their background or wealth. This accessibility is what makes backyard basketball so intrinsically American. It's a sport that levels the playing field, requiring only a hoop and a ball.
I never imagined that those early days of shooting hoops would lead me to where I am today. It's a blessing to have had the opportunities and connections that basketball has provided. Looking back, I'm in awe of how far I've come.
With the creation of Unrivaled, a three-on-three women's basketball league, I, along with Breanna Stewart, aim to shift the cultural narrative. We want to empower girls to take up street ball, to join in and be aggressive, unapologetic, and competitive. There's a wealth of research highlighting the importance of sports for girls, and we want to ensure they have the confidence to participate and excel.
The three-on-three format and one-on-one tournaments are designed to showcase women's skills and competitiveness, challenging traditional gender norms. We hope that younger girls will see this and believe in their ability to achieve their goals, both on and off the court.
Passing by the hoop in the park near my current home in Minnesota always brings a sense of nostalgia. It's a reminder of the pure joy and community that street ball can bring. While professional sports have their merits, there's a special warmth and simplicity to pickup games, where it's all about the love of the game and the people you share it with.
Personally, I think it's important to recognize the power of these backyard games. They foster a sense of belonging and provide a platform for personal growth and confidence building. It's a beautiful thing to see how something as simple as a hoop can bring people together and create such lasting memories and connections.
