Unite Union Fights Reach's Watford and Glasgow Plant Shutdowns | Print Media's Digital Transition (2026)

Unite calls on Reach to reconsider plans to close the Watford and Glasgow plants

This comes on the heels of Reach announcing hundreds of job losses across its print and online titles in September.

Chief executive Piers North emphasized: “Print still plays a vital role in our business and will continue to generate substantial circulation revenue, but our trajectory is clearly digital. This consolidation is a measured, strategic step designed to secure our long-term success. By streamlining our print operations, we can devote more resources to content and audience development—the key drivers of our business—and accelerate growth in digital areas, including our digital subscriptions.”

Jaswinder Singh of Unite responded: “Reach has questions to answer. The company must provide the financial rationale behind this decision and stop withholding essential information from Unite.”

Reach told the BBC that it believes it is fulfilling all legal obligations regarding the information shared with unions and partners.
